From the federal to the municipal level, government organizations face tough decisions when securing critical data. With limited resources and wide-reaching, overlapping systems, security teams and leadership are forced to adapt to higher volume and more sophisticated attacks. Michigan’s Oakland County has established itself as a local leader in smart security planning, an initiative led by their CISO, Chris Burrows. We’ll talk with Chris and get his perspective on the unique challenges facing state and local governments today, and how Oakland is addressing them.

Chris Burrows
Chris Burrows is currently the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Oakland County. He has created the first IT Risk and Security Program at Oakland County. Chris' responsibilities include IT security governance, cyber security operations, compliance and IT risk management.
Chris brings 25+ years of experience in risk management, information security and IT Operational roles along with a MBA from Lawrence Technological University. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), ITIL certified and a Certified Project Manager. He has served on International IT Security Standard Boards, provided recommendations to multiple US federal frameworks and very active in the community. Chris was recently named Michigan’s 2016 IT Professional of the year by Mi-GMIS (Michigan Government Information Sciences). He also received the 2016 SANS “You Make a Difference Award”.
